Brandy Melville- One size fits all?

From time to time I see these clothing brands everywhere, with the brand name being plastered on shirts and sweatshirts. However, for Brandy Melville, it is a different case in its marketing. As many people may know, Brandy Melville is a clothing company that sells clothes and targets teenage girls. However, their strange marketing is very unlike the traditional way, which has caused some backlash and controversy. The biggest backlash at Brandy Melville would be the one size fits all, and it the one size happens to only fit a size small. The image that Brandy Melville is portraying as the "brandy Melville girl" is emphasis on the skinny, beautiful girl who can pull off the stylish clothes that they sell and follows the trend.
Image result for brandy melville    Brandy Melville although sells stylish and trendy clothing, the one size policy and their subtle discrimination by mainly hiring or modeling Caucasian girls often receives the media's backlash. To add on, the stores in Brandy Melville are run by teenage girls or young adults who all happen to fit the "Brandy Melville girl" aesthetics. Their marketing is different from others since these girls often go out and also help shoot some pics to model the Brandy Melville clothing, making it a lot more cheaper for the overall company.
However, this message that Brandy sends out is loud, and harmful. The body that is only allowed in this exclusive brand is only for the really skinny people, and it just isn't lined up with reality. Many girls and women don't even fit in this beauty standard, and this message that Brandy sends out hurts those girls and women who don't fit into this "club" or beauty standard. It would make someone feel ugly and fat, which is really harmful, along with comparison. This insane standard that is set up by Brandy is dangerous since it could even trigger or add on to the insecurities that many has, especially those who suffers anorexia would continue. It could make someone feel left out, or unworthy if they aren't "fitting in" Brandy Melville (quite literally). The message that girls and women must conform to this beauty standard is plain unrealistic and is harmful to the self esteem to many teenagers.
Basically, Brandy Melville does have really cute clothes, however this message that they have slapped into the face of many, is extremely discouraging and unrealistic. The bodies of women vary, and they shouldn't feel as if they aren't worth much if they didn't "fit into" this beauty standard that is quite unrealistic. Women and girls shouldn't feel this way because of one clothing brand telling them that they aren't good enough, but to find inner confidence in the person they are.

Peace.

  1. I have always thought the same way of Brandy Melville's clothes. If Brandy Melville's clothing were not aesthetic pleasing in the first place, do you think that social media was a major factor in spreading its popularity and its recent rise to fame?

  2. I agree 100%. I feel like Brandy Melville is a very exclusive brand. It does not only make girls who do not fit in with this aesthetic feel bad about themselves, it also encourages the girls who do fit in this clique to continue to exclude those who do not. This causes unnecessary stress about body image and the clothes that you wear. Brandy Melville's aesthetic has set a tone for a lot of the teenage fashion today. Many other brands have matched this aesthetic to make it feel like Brandy Melville's. This is kind of sad considering the fact that this brand makes so many people feel bad about themselves and is causing people to try to do things that may not/ are not beneficial for them mentally and physically.
